GEOSS AIP-6 Engineering Reports

One of the major outcomes of the GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot, Phase 6 (AIP-6) is a set of Engineering Reports (ERs). Listed below is the set of coordinated ERs that describe the requirements, design, and implementation conducted during AIP-6. The ERs provide a portion of the augmentation of the GCI by AIP-6.

Agriculture Engineering Report

 

Scope: This document captures the demonstration work and scenarios in the combined Agricultural Societal Benefit Area (SBA) and Disaster SBA during GEOSS AIP Phase 6. In this phase, two disaster applications have been demonstrated. One is the remote-sensing-based flood crop loss assessment. Another is global drought monitoring based vegetation indices. The application portals are an aggregation or mashup of functions or Web services by reusing standard OGC-compliant Web services.
Both portals have been registered into the GEOSS Component and Service Registry (CSR) () hosted and maintained at the Center for Spatial Information Science and Systems, George Mason University. It is harvested by GEOSS Clearinghouse. These portals can be searched through GeoPortal.

Energy Engineering Report

 

Scope: In the framework of the GEOSS AIP-6, an Energy scenario has been proposed by a consortium of institutes leaded by MINES ParisTech and supported by the Global Atlas for Renewable Energy initiative coordinated by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) based in Abu Dhabi.

The Global Atlas for Renewable Energy is the outcome of an international effort involving 67 countries and more than 50 institutes and partners. It was initiated under the Clean Energy Ministerial and contributes to the Sustainable Energy for All initiative, initiated by the United Nations. This initiative was referenced as well as the European FP7 projects ENDORSE (ENergy DOwnstReam SErvices - Providing energy components for GMES; 2011-2013) under the AIP-5.

Water Scenario Engineering Report

 

Scope: This AIP-6 GEOSS Water Services Engineering Report (ER) provides a description of the contributed components and services to the GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot 6 (AIP-6), in support of the GEO Work Plan 2012-2015 and Water Societal Benefit Area (SBA) communities.

Data Sharing Engineering Report

 

Scope: The AIP-6 Data Sharing Guidelines Working Group (DSGWG) Engineering Report (ER) provides information related to the research and development of three main areas of effort:

  • Authentication and Single Sign-On
  • Use Metrics
  • GEOSS Data-CORE Compatible Licenses

For each of these areas of interest, the research was used to focus the effort and produce results that can be made operational in the GCI at some point in the near future. The scope of Authentication and Single Sign-On was restricted to authentication only, but may include authorization in the future. The scope of Use Metrics was restricted to those metrics that do not, in any way, conflict with or jeopardize the privacy of GEOSS data users or their organizations. The scope of GEOSS Data-CORE Compatible Licenses was restricted to only those open access licenses and waivers identified by the GEO Data Sharing Working Group (DSWG) and approved by the GEO Plenary.

GCI Research and GeoViQua Integration Engineering Report

 

Scope: This document summarizes two main activities took place in AIP6. In the Agriculture group a methodology to integrate both GEO label API and the User feedback system API was tested in the GMU drought portal. In the GCI research, several GeoViQua quality improvements were incorporated into the DAB. The system is related to GEO SBA Task AG-01 Global Agricultural Monitoring and Early Warning. The system to be integrated into is its Component C1 - A Global Operational Monitoring System of Systems for Agricultural Production, Famine Early-warning, Food Security and Land-use Change.

System Design Engineering Report

 

Scope: The GEOSS Unified Modeling team engineering report provides the depiction and expresses the Reference Model of the Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) viewpoint using the Unified Modeling Language as the syntax. This is done by expressing each scenario of each GEOSS Societal Benefit Area(SBA) in four of five viewpoints as described in ISO/IEC 10746:1996 Part 3 Reference Model ODP Architecture and description of the UML concepts and extensions provided in ISO/IEC 19793:2007. Our original role in AIP-6 was to provide support in development of requirements for data sources via our information views for each SBA and requirements for necessary components. Component design was to be provided via our Technology views for each SBA created in AIP-2, AIP-3, AIP4 and AIP-5. The one remaining Viewpoint is the Technical Viewpoint. Because only the Disaster Management, Agriculture and Water SBAs were continued by their associated teams in AIP-6, only these views were able to be addressed. Hopefully the remaining work will be completed in AIP-7. Because the Ministers of GEO wanted us to produce videos of the Disaster Management, Agriculture and Water SBA work. Subsequently, Disaster Management and Agriculture merged their effort by concentrating on the Drought sub-Scenario as it applied to Agriculture and Disaster Management. This limited our new Architecture work to completing those associated Computational and Engineering Views.
