Regional Climate Change Water Resources Demo

Demonstration Theme

Decision support client access to water resource and climate change data including IPCC Data Distribution Centers.

Areas of Interest (AOI)

  • An area in state of Colorado, near Boulder.
  • AOI-1 - about 10 degrees square to show several values of IPCC scenarios ~5 degree data
  • AOI-2 - about 1 degree square to show higher resolution data

Scenario Script - Draft

  • Display area of interest for context (SDSC CHUASI HIS Main Client and Demo Client)
    • Base layers , e.g, roads, boundaries, Landsat imagery, etc.
    • Others:
  • Display the current situation of water resources
    • Station layers: USGS NWIS, EPA STORET and NCDC ASOS networks
    • Historical climatic variables (NARR at NCDC, BADC, Others?)
    • Palmer Drought
    • Socioeconomic layers (CIESIN)
    • Drought layers NCDC
  • Access detailed data for stations of interest (most vulnerable)
    • Access WaterML to generate charts of hydrologic parameters corresponding with the climate dynamics variables
  • Discover climate model prediction servers
    • Search a catalog (using a GEO Web Portal Candidate?)
  • Display climate model prediction layers
    • IPCC Data Distribution Centre at BADC: SRES and IS92 Scenarios
    • Compare current situation to predicted

You will get a whole range of layers having names of the form 'model/variable'. The model term encodes both the model and the IPCC scenario that has been run.

US Census Socioeconomic Data from CIESIN

Population density WMS here:

There are data descriptions for everything we have for the US here:

See the catalog of variables link on the above page for details. Not all of these are available but if there are some that are especially useful I can stand them up in short order. If it is useful, we have more spatially detailed data for Boulder (the same variables as above) that I can stand up as well. -Greg Yetman
