Power Law Distributions of Google Indexed KML: Is the Long Tail the Wrong Tail for the GeoWeb

Mon, 2008-04-28 16:02
We made the cross country hop out to Santa Clara to attend Location Intelligence today. The weather is awesome and we just finished the morning workshops. I sat in on Lior Ron and David Minogue’s talk on “Searching the GeoWeb“. The talk produced many interesting insights on Google’s approach to searching geodata, but one statistic really grabbed my attention. Of the millions of KML files Google has indexed roughly 95% of them have only a single feature. Meaning the vast majority of KML indexe

Virtual Earth vs. Google MyMaps KML Support

As we’ve been putting GeoCommons through its paces I’ve been testing KML files we generate in different applications. The most interesting comparison by far has been between Virtual Earth and Google MyMaps. I did a high level comparison of the two plus Yahoo! MapMixer a few blog posts back, but after testing several KML files in each I thought it would make for a good follow up. Especially after Michael Jones’ comments to James Fee’s post about KML being the HTML of the GeoWeb. The good news i

KML now an OGC Open Standard In ogc, ogckml | No Comments After a little less than a year of great work by the KML SWG, we have a standard! The OGC press release gives some facts and a link to the OGC KML 2.2 Standard, and John Timmer at ars technica has a nice piece on the significance of this step. His article won’t offer anything new for geo industry veterans, but it’s great to see the mainstream IT media “get it” when it comes to our technologies and markets. This is hopefully a big win fo

KML - “a little less than a year” Published in KML Well, it’s official. And as reported here: “The whole process is anticipated to take less than a year.” 363 days later, that statement holds true.

Roll Your Own KML App In mass market, programming, ogckml | No Comments This morning at the OGC Technical Committee meeting, the Google Earth & Maps team announced an alpha of libkml, an open source (BSD) library for reading/parsing/writing KML 2.2. It’s a C++ library, but includes SWIG bindings for Java, Python, Ruby, Perl and PHP. The hope is that this piece of code will help developers build comprehensive, robust KML support into their applications. But note, this is NOT a mini-Google Earth.

Google releases libkml 0.1 alpha Published in Google, KML | 2 Comments At the OGC Technical Committee meeting today in St. Louis, Google pushed out the initial release of an open-source library for parsing and publishing KML. Read more about it on the Google Open Source Blog. libkml was originally “announced” about 6 months ago as part of the kick-off of the standardization of KML within the OGC. libkml is interesting in several ways. KML itself is just an XML specification for geograp
